DGPS Survey in India, Bharat.Differential Global Positioning System,GPS,RTK,PPK,Statics
A DGPS survey—short for Differential Global Positioning System—is a high-precision surveying method that corrects GPS errors using a fixed reference station. It’s widely used in engineering, mapping, and hydrogeological fieldwork where centimetre-level accuracy is essential.
How DGPS Works
• A base station is set up at a known location.
• A rover unit moves around collecting data.
• The base station calculates the error in GPS signals and sends correction data to the rover.
• This correction improves accuracy from ~15 meters (standard GPS) to 1–3 cm
DGPS Mode of Operation:
1. Reference Station Setup
• A fixed base station is placed at a precisely known location.
• It receives signals from GPS satellites just like any GPS receiver.
2. Error Calculation
• The base station compares its known location with the GPS-calculated position.
• The difference reveals errors caused by atmospheric delays, satellite clock drift, and signal multipath.
3. Correction Transmission
• The base station broadcasts correction data via radio, cellular, or satellite link.
• These corrections are sent in real time or stored for post-processing.
4. Rover Receiver Operation
• A mobile rover unit receives both GPS signals and correction data.
• It applies the corrections to its own GPS readings, refining its position to centimetre-level accuracy.
5. Position Fix
• The rover computes its final location using corrected satellite data.
• In post-processing mode, raw data from both base and rover are processed together for precise baseline computation.
Methods and Equipment Surveyors select techniques that balance accuracy, speed, and cost based on project requirements. - GPS and total station instruments for precise point measurements - Aerial photogrammetry using drones or aircraft to generate orthoimages - LiDAR sensors for high-resolution 3D point clouds, even through vegetation - Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to detect subsurface utilities and voids - Hand level and tape methods for small-scale or preliminary surveys
